Irrigation Systems FAQ

Answers to the common questions about irrigation systems use and benefits.

Most properties have irrigation systems installed to provide supplemental water to the landscape during the warmer months. An efficient irrigation system ensures a healthy landscape by targeting water to the intended plant material, which in turn saves money on the water bill.

Lawn sprinkler systems are the traditional go-to for landscape irrigation. Sprinklers are great when you have a large swath of plants or for use on grassy lawns. Drip systems allow landscapers to fine-tune how much water their plants receive, and at the optimal times of day. They operate using porous hoses that deliver water directly to the plant roots. Bubblers are good when you have a lot of identical plants in the same small area. They are great for shrubs, trees, and raised plant beds.

Sprinklers are typically set to run for about a 30 minutes duration, twice a week. Your goal is to provide at least 1″ of water a week for your lawn. When it’s hot and dry, double the water times while still trying to water just 2 or 3 days a week. Of course you need to follow the watering schedule requirements for your location.

Sod areas should be watered at least 2 or 3 times daily for the first two weeks. After 2-3 weeks, when your lawn seems to be very saturated and the sod is growing long, let the lawn dry out for a good 3-5 days. This is usually a good time to cut the grass. Once the grass is cut, we suggest just watering once a day, during the early morning hours. Beginning sometime after midnight and finishing before 8 am is best.

The Spring Watering Schedule begins March 1 and runs through October 31. Watering days are based on your odd or even address. Even numbered homes water on Wednesday and Sunday. Odd numbered homes water on Tuesday and Saturday. The Winter Watering Schedule begins November 1 and runs through February 28. Watering is reduced to one day per week, either on Saturday or Sunday. Residents may pick their watering day. No weekday watering is permitted. Learn more at cityofsacramento.org
