Water Features FAQ

Answers to the common questions about water features use and benefits.

The most common water features for landscaping applications include a range of fountains, small natural ponds, standard and pondless waterfalls, waterwalls, rain curtains, scuppers, and streams.

Water features promote relaxation and help to reduce stress as a result of their beauty, the rhythmic sound of moving water, and by decreasing environmental noise. Many water elements can be added in small spaces, and they’re of benefit to local wild life, such as wild birds who have difficulty finding water sources. And since the water re-circulates there is little, to no, impact on your water bill.

Simple wall fountains, cascading waterfalls, and pondless water features are great low-maintenance water feature choices since, unlike pools and spas, they don’t require a lot of monitoring and chemical testing. You do need to clean them regularly to minimize algae build up, yet cleaning is typically a simple process using a bristle brush. Additives can also be added (barley is a natural deterrent to algae and EPA-registered algaecides are available).

Your water feature will be more aesthetically pleasing if designed to complement the style of your home and existing landscaping. For example, a Victorian-style home would do well with a geometrically shaped pond placed in a central location, an Asian-influenced landscaping might include a bamboo fountain, and Spanish-inspired decor might use a tiered, concrete fountain. Sunlight is also a primary factor to consider when choosing a location, especially if you want a water garden. Aiming for at least six hours of daily sunlight usually allows for optimal growth for a variety of aquatic plants.

Circulating the water with a pump, waterfall, or fountain will keep mosquito larvae from hatching; plus, some animals, like birds, will be more attracted to the water. Moving water also increases aeration for fish, which will also help eliminate those pesky mosquitoes. You can also have a pump installed to change speeds of the flow of water, which can effect noise of the water feature as well as continue to keep mosquitoes away.
